My art is something I love to talk about. Standing in front of one of my paintings and describing the way the original idea became something else, or how many times I wiped away the background before it showed me something worth keeping- that I could do all day.
I can talk about the flow of inks or the layers that lifted in just the right patterns. I can go on about leaning on my pastel and ending up with half a painting on the side of my hand. I can try to describe using charcoal with water and just wanting to leave it exactly how it lands, while still wanting to add more just to see what happens.
There are so many incredible things about using inks, acrylics, pencils, pastels, paper, water, salt, flour, plastics, graphite, watercolors, charcoal and so many more tools to create a lasting impression of something seen or imagined (or a combination of those). What is difficult to describe is how it feels to get lost in that process.
Creating a piece of art involves that special combination of working with my body to move the tools around, loosing myself in the process of both directing and watching what the elements do as I put them together, and really searching internally for the meaning it evokes when I look at it, place my hands on it, or think about it.
Creating art is a truly holistic experience.
Each time I create something new I have a new story to tell. I have something to offer to those around me- a way to participate and share with the world. One of my greatest joys is listening to other people tell me what theysee in my art. It is so satisfying to know that I’ve made something that not only gave me an unmatchable experience but gave someone else the opportunity to experience something new and – hopefully- inspiring too.
The subjects and moods of my paintings change as I do, but the core is the same. Evoking feelings that perhaps are not always easy to express. Whether it’s serene, silly or serious, it all comes from a desire to evoke the union of human and material that creates a completely new ethereal entity with no boundaries. Every eye that catches a certain light, every mind that analyzes all possibilities, every hand that grazes the tangible- they all find something different, personal and meaningful. That is “ART”. It gives something to everyone. Art is a gift.
