My art is constantly evolving and teaching me to be true to myself - just listen to what I think is beautiful or interesting. It's OK. Try something new. It' OK. Just start painting and see what happens. It's OK!
For me, art brings the meditation and focus into my life that I often lose in the chaos my brain generously supplies. Art gives me a place to become absorbed in colors, the dance of paints blending and the movement of lines. It's just better for me than thinking about the latest news headlines or feeling guilty about not calling my mother.
I can play when I'm painting. I can experiment when I'm painting. I can allow myself to make mistakes, cover old work, or explore the possibilities of a fresh canvas with no plan. Everything about painting gives me something back.
I've learned that even when things get spilled, or the right color just won't mix itself, or when I want to cry because what's in my head just won't get on the canvas- that is actually a gift . The frustration, demand, sweat, aching knees and hands, are balanced by the satisfactions, beauty, relaxation and mind-clearing creative force of painting. It's one of those incredible experiences that sometimes come disguised as a reasons to throw things or scream out loud.
Talking about art is a creative exploration with others who will see it with their own experiences and point of view. The opportunity of seeing another person relate to my art through their own life filter adds another layer to the incredible privilege of being an artist. Sharing the feelings and thoughts that come with simply viewing marks on canvas can be life changing.
